The Jay is cornered. See feathers on right, at edge of road - I came round the corner and scared the Sparrowhawk off after his first 'hit'.
Female Sparrowhawk. She just perched there until the Jay's nerve broke and he flew up the road.
The Victim. See the marks on the Jay's back from the first hit.
The Sparrowhawk makes its second and final hit
The Sparrowhawk covers the Jay
I am now around 2 metres away from her. There was no way she was going to let her dinner (late breakfast!) fly free.
Not a pretty picture but it is 'nature'. The Jay has gone to his happy squawking ground and just after this was taken the Sparrowhawk decided the photo session was over and flew, with some difficulty, and carried the Jay away.
